There’s good news for businesses in Asia Pacific. In a new global study we conducted with 451 Research, we found that the region leads the world in digital transformation maturity. Fifty-seven percent of Asia Pacific companies have a formal strategy for digital transformation, ahead of 45 percent in North America and 47 percent in Europe.
Businesses are waking up to the reality of forces like disruption, changing gears from awareness to adoption when it comes to digital transformation. To adapt and survive, they want to be more agile, supercharge operations, manage their risks, and meet today’s customer needs more effectively.
The process might look long and intimidating. But to simplify matters, I’d like to encourage you to look at your own journey from a different perspective: the art of origami.
Origami is one of the best illustrations of digital transformation. I have always been fascinated by this paper art with its long and rich tradition. Here are some reasons why I believe it applies to the process of digitization:
Every journey is unique
A single blank sheet of paper can be transformed into multiple forms. This can range from simpler designs like flowers to more complex ones like cranes and turtles. Every piece is unique and requires different techniques of folding. Much like digital transformation, every organization embarks on a different path. This can be due to factors like company size, target markets, and rate of technological adoption. One of the most important insights from origami is that there is no “one-size-fits-all” folding technique, just like our digital transformations. Evaluate your needs carefully before or as you progress through your journey.
All you need are the right tools and expertise
In the art of origami, you don’t create a beautiful piece of origami out of thin air. It is meticulously transformed from a single sheet of paper through a series of folds. All it takes is good guidance—either from a set of instructions or an experienced artist. The results of digital transformation are achieved in a similar way. It is a step-by-step evolution that goes through multiple stages before it can take its final form. During digital transformation, it is essential to have a clearly laid out roadmap—tailored to your needs—and a partner that can accelerate and secure your journey from start to finish.
The end result is worth the effort
A completed piece of origami speaks for itself. It is elegant, beautiful, and can be used for a variety of purposes. You can use it to decorate your home, show it to friends, or gift it to a loved one. The results are worth the work. As you progress through your digital transformation path, you will begin to see the benefits take form in your organization. You will find more time to focus on innovation, instead of just infrastructure. Your organization will have more confidence to disrupt with the agility to adopt new business models. Operations will run seamlessly so that you will worry less about downtime and your workforce will feel more empowered to serve customers more effectively. And in today’s world of pervasive cyber threats, you will be able to defend against them by spending smarter—not more—on cybersecurity technology.
Let’s tackle our digital transformation challenges with the skill of an origami artist. Find a digitization strategy that is right for you, ensure a simpler journey with the right partner, and watch your efforts bloom into a competitive digital enterprise.
